About The Market
The Folktown Market
The Folktown Market runs weekly on a Saturday from 12-5pm. The market sells locally grown fruit and vegetables and locally made foods and gourmet goodies, and flowers, condiments, confectionary, cheese, coffee, hot food and local crafts. We endeavour to source products of high standards, and we give priority to first of all local and homemade and/or organic produce and products. Coffee and fruit vendors selling fairtrade produce also get priority. We are very much supportive of the Earth Market concept and Slow Food movement and wish to implement as many of their high standards as possible.
The market is in one of the most central spaces in Belfast, Bank Sq, only a few yards from Royal Avenue, Castle Court shopping centre and multi-storey car parks. The square and adjacent streets have been upgraded by the Department of Social Development as part of the Streets Ahead scheme. The refurbishment has catered for the market and other events with pop-up electricity and water points. Surrounded by two of the oldest churches, Mourne Seafood Restaurant and Kelly’s Cellars, a local pub dating back to the 18th century, the square is steeped in character and heritage – we are now turning this into a perfect place for people meet and do their shopping – crossing barriers and reconnecting the city.
Our aims and objectives as a social enterprise
The aim of the Folktown Market is to be a catalyst for launching the overall Folktown regeneration / revitalisation initiative, and to create a sustainable income stream for the company. Any surplus is redistributed to meet the aims and objectives for regeneration set by the local community.
The objective of the market is to attract footfall by creating a traditional market experience with quality products for both tourists and the local population alike thereby helping to promote Belfast and local produce and crafts. We wish to create an inclusive community by attracting customers and traders from all backgrounds and by utilising the potential of an under used area of Belfast City Centre.
In a general public survey carried out at the Market, 100% of respondents said ‘Yes’ when asked if they would visit the Market again. The general public have said great things about Folktown Market:
